Job Description – Shift Manager
Summary of the Role:
As Shift Manager, you will be responsible for directing the company’s operating activities on a three-cycle shift pattern to manage the resources of the company including employees, equipment, material and processes to ensure that the company meets the deliverables of the company such as Environmental, Health and Safety of employees and visitors, production schedules adherence, Quality targets, KPI’s and costs.
Implementing and improving systems in the company to produce and deliver improvements and cost control of operational systems.
You will play a key role in driving the implementation of the organisation’s best practice of Operational Excellence through the implementation of Lean Best practice principles and continuous improvement activities within your area and support activities outside your area of responsibilities.
You will be the central point of contact for all key manufacturing functions including production, manufacturing engineering, facilities, maintenance and Environmental, Health and Safety.
You will report directly to the Director of Operations and work within a matrix structure in the organisation.
Leadership & Strategy
Maintain a clean, safe workplace and ensure zero lost time accidents.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements at all times.
Lead, motivate and develop Cell Leaders, General Operators and other support teams in communication, team development, career development, motivation and skills.
Maintain production supply to fulfil the customer demand production plan.
Drives and meets the Key Performance Indicators of the production shift.
Ensure the timely issuing of internal reports which are used to determine the production area performance.
Identify opportunities to improve work processes and methods by working with other technical teams and EHS functions.
Implement team goals and objectives and review on a timely basis
Ensure Cell Leaders and General Operators are trained in manufacturing procedures and training matrix is kept up to date.
Assume responsibility for internal and external audit actions associated with the manufacturing area to ensure effective closure of corrective actions.
Maintain good employee morale and discipline, and manage all disciplinary issues in line with HR policies and procedures.
Leads cross-functional team in identifying and resolving technical issues.
Perform other duties as assigned by management
Ensure that Operational activities always meet and exceed Customer expectations
Work with all department heads including Development, Quality, Finance, Logistics and HR are fully informed of operational objectives and imperatives.
Set clear KPI’s for Cell Leaders and ensure gaps are managed and corrective actions put in place.
Responsible for the health and safety of all employees under their management and employees/visitors in their area.
Maintain employee Health, safety and morale by creating a safe and efficient working environment.
Responsible for ensuring Risk Assessments are carried out for all operations and ensure adherence to said Risk Assessments
Responsible for Production Management, scheduling and Control of production plan from Logistics
Plan, direct, and implement the manufacturing processes, quality and production improvements in compliance with company goals, objectives.
Organise and direct workflow for satisfying production requirement in a cost-efficient lean structure.
Support the development, planning, implementation and maintenance of manufacturing methods and processes.
Establish and control conditions of production in order to meet and exceed customer supply and quality specifications.
Manage and maintain optimum employment levels through rigorous recruitment selection processes, training of personnel to maximize labour efficiency.
Manage and direct the Cell Leaders on planning and scheduling customer orders to satisfy shipments On Time and In Full.
Mentor and Coach direct reports to reach company targets and objectives.
Use hands-on approach to managing the team, leading problem-solving activities.
Participate actively in standardisation and cost reduction across all manufacturing areas and support other cost reduction initiatives across the plant.
Direct and Manage capacity planning ensuring optimisation of efficiencies such as machine, labour, material and plant lay-outs.
Regular reporting on Operational Performance and implementation strategies.
Manage and control consumable costs across all manufacturing areas.
Ensure that each area and all employees are compliant with all Environmental, Health and Safety regulations and all regulations relating to the company’s EPA licence.
Maximise the efficiency of production lines and manage and promote improvements to Production Areas.
Liaise with other departments to maximise efficiency through co-operation, sharing of know- how and expertise.
NATURE AND SCOPE
The incumbent reports directly to the Director of Operations and works within a matrix structure organisation. It is important that the incumbent is self-motivated, able to prioritize work load in all areas of responsibility.

10 plus years’ experience within a manufacturing environment with at least 5 years’ experience in a comparable position.

Ability to travel as required (estimated up to 30% time)

Education and Qualifications
Minimum of 10 years' experience in a similar environment, of which at least 5 years related experience in people management.

Ability to communicate effectively with other functions and management team.
Ability to work effectively as a manufacturing team member to achieve production goals.
Action oriented and enjoys challenges; drives for results; is versatile, flexible and is willing to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to identify improvements in manufacturing methods and processes.
Understanding of relevant SAP(or other ERP system) modules and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) proficiency.
Flexibility to work within different shift patterns is essential.
