Job Description

Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH) is a 77-bed surgical hospital located on the outskirts of Mullingar with four operating theatres and an endoscopy unit. We provide a wide range of surgical care across multiple specialties and offer 24/7 Stepdown, Minor Injuries, and Rapid Access services in collaboration with the HSE.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Pharmacist (P/T or F/T hours, FTC - Mat leave cover) to join our team.

Role Summary
The Senior Pharmacist will provide clinical, professional, and operational leadership within the Pharmacy Department at Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH). The post holder will oversee the safe, effective, and economical management of medicines, including procurement, storage, dispensing, and governance of medications and intravenous fluids.
Working closely with medical, nursing, and multidisciplinary colleagues, the Senior Pharmacist will ensure high-quality, patient-centred pharmaceutical care in line with professional, legal, and regulatory standards. The role includes shared responsibility for pharmacy service delivery, medication safety, stock management, staff education, and continuous service improvement.
 
Key Responsibilities 
1. Clinical Pharmacy Practice & Medication Management
· Ensure the safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of medicines across the hospital
· Supervise and support the dispensing and administration of medications in compliance with legal, professional, and hospital standards
· Respond to medication-related queries from clinical staff and external stakeholders
· Promote best practice in prescribing, administration, and monitoring of medicines
· Actively promote safe medication usage and medication safety initiatives
2. Stock, Procurement & Inventory Management
· Oversee stock supply, rotation, storage, disposal, and wastage of medications and intravenous fluids
· Maintain appropriate stock levels to meet clinical demand while ensuring cost-effective purchasing
· Monitor medication usage trends and implement strategies to minimise waste
· Ensure accurate record keeping and traceability of all medicines
3. Governance, Risk & Quality Assurance
· Adopt a proactive risk management approach to medication management
· Participate in the development, implementation, and review of pharmacy policies, procedures, and guidelines in line with national and international standards
· Support and contribute to clinical audit, medication safety reviews, and quality improvement initiatives
· Participate in the hospital’s accreditation processes and inspections
· Ensure compliance with PSI standards, legislation, and hospital governance frameworks
4. Multidisciplinary Collaboration & Communication
· Liaise with consultants, nurses, and allied health professionals to support optimal drug therapy and patient outcomes
· Contribute to multidisciplinary team discussions regarding patient care and medication management
· Provide expert pharmaceutical advice to support clinical decision-making
5. Education, Training & Professional Development
· Assist in the delivery of education and training programmes for pharmacy staff and the wider clinical team
· Support ongoing professional development within the pharmacy service
· Maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) in accordance with PSI requirements
· Act as a role model for professional practice, accountability, and lifelong learning
 
Essential Criteria
Knowledge/Experience
· Registered Pharmacist with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI)
· Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience, preferably within a hospital pharmacy setting (community experience also considered)
· Demonstrated clinical, professional, and administrative competence to discharge the responsibilities of a Senior Pharmacist role
· Strong knowledge of medication safety, pharmacy governance, and regulatory requirements
· Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
· Proven commitment to quality, accuracy, and patient safety
· Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
