Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH) is a 77-bed surgical hospital located on the outskirts of Mullingar with four operating theatres and an endoscopy unit. We provide a wide range of surgical care across multiple specialties and offer 24/7 Stepdown, Minor Injuries, and Rapid Access services in collaboration with the HSE.
Role Summary
The Registrar – Step Down Unit (SDU) provides medical care to patients requiring post-acute or intermediate care within Charter Medical Private Hospital. This role supports the clinical management of patients in the Step-Down Unit and provides cover to the Rapid Access Clinic (RAC) as required. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Consultant Physicians, Nursing Teams, and Allied Health Professionals to ensure safe, patient-centred care in line with CMPH standards and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
• Provide medical cover for the Step Down Unit on a rotational 24/7 basis and support RAC services as required.
• Perform daily ward rounds and attend multidisciplinary meetings.
• Manage patient admissions, reviews, prescriptions, and discharge summaries in accordance with hospital policy.
• Respond promptly to medical emergencies, cardiac arrests, and urgent care situations within the hospital.
• Lead resuscitation efforts and coordinate the on-site emergency response team when necessary.
• Maintain legible, accurate, and timely clinical records in line with professional standards.
• Participate in resuscitation exercises, audits, and safety huddles.
• Cover in the Rapid Access Clinic (RAC) as required.
Professional Practice & Compliance
• Work under the supervision of Consultant Physicians while maintaining autonomy appropriate to the Registrar grade.
• Comply with CMPH and HSE policies, procedures, and clinical governance frameworks.
• Safeguard patient dignity, confidentiality, and privacy in accordance with the Patient Charter.
• Support safe clinical practices within SDU and RAC, ensuring adherence to infection prevention, medication safety, and documentation standards.
• Demonstrate flexibility in covering other clinical areas if required.
Education & Professional Development
• Maintain continuous professional development (CPD) in accordance with Irish Medical Council (IMC) requirements.
• Attend mandatory and in-service training sessions.
• Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and peer review processes.
• Engage in teaching and mentorship of undergraduate medical students as part of CMPH’s affiliation with RCSI.
• CMPH supports professional education through funding for approved courses such as the Certificate in Healthcare Management (UCD) or Clinical Care in Residential Care Facilities (RCPI).
Essential Criteria - Knowledge/ Experience
Each candidate must, at the latest date for receipt of completed applications for the post:
• MRCPI / FRCPI / MICGP qualification.
• Minimum of two years’ experience in an acute hospital setting, ideally with gerontology or related discipline.
• Registered with the Irish Medical Council.
• Valid BLS, PLS, and ACLS certification.
• Evidence of completed CPD within the previous 12 months.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Flexibility to work across SDU, RAC, and other clinical areas as required.
