The CSSD Operative is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilisation and distribution of reusable invasive medical devices (RIMDs) to all operating theatres and relevant clinical departments.
The role requires the consistent production of accurate work to a high standard in accordance with departmental procedures, quality initiatives and national decontamination standards. The post holder will support the effective day-to-day operation of the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), ensuring adherence to the highest standards of hygiene, infection prevention, safety and patient care.
The CSSD Operative will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to maintaining a safe, efficient and compliant sterile services environment.
Key Responsibilities
Decontamination & Sterilisation Duties
• Decontaminate reusable medical devices using approved manual and mechanical methods in line with hospital guidelines and national standards
• Inspect, function test and assemble instruments and equipment, identifying faults or damage and reporting same to the CSSD Team Lead/ Theatre Manager
• Operate washer disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners and sterilizers in accordance with manufacturer instructions and departmental procedures
• Ensure all sterilisation cycles are correctly loaded, monitored and documented
• Release sterile loads only when all parameters meet required standards
• Maintain traceability of all instruments using the computerised tracking system
Quality & Compliance
• Maintain accurate documentation and records of all decontamination and sterilisation processes, ensuring full and clear signatures as required
• Comply with ongoing decontamination audits and quality monitoring systems
• Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and procedures
• Follow all health and safety regulations, including appropriate use of PPE
• Identify and report equipment faults, incidents or risks in accordance with hospital policy
• Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives within the department
Operational & Team Responsibilities
• Maintain effective work practices and professional relationships within the CSSD unit and hospital
• Work as part of a team and report directly to the CSSD Team Lead/ Theatre Manager
• Attend to general cleaning of all work surfaces, trolleys, shelving, storage areas and machines within CSSD
• Assist with stock control and storage of sterile supplies
• Take, record and deliver messages in accordance with departmental procedures
• Demonstrate flexibility and mobility consistent with service needs
Working Conditions
• Exposure to biological materials and chemicals used in the decontamination process
• Requirement to wear PPE in line with safety protocols
• Manual handling and standing for prolonged periods may be required
• Work in a fast-paced clinical environment with time-sensitive turnaround requirements
Professional Development
• Participate in mandatory training and departmental study days
• Undertake further education in decontamination practices as required
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current standards and best practice
Essential Criteria - Knowledge/ Experience
• Healthcare FETAC Level 5 Qualification / QQI Major Award in Healthcare (essential)
• Relevant Qualification in RIMD Decontamination or commitment to commence
• Experience in Decontamination and/or CSSD (desirable)
• Basic IT skills
• Good organisational and time management skills
