Job Description

The Decontamination Assistant – Endoscopy is responsible for supporting the safe and effective decontamination, reprocessing, storage and tracking of flexible endoscopes and associated reusable medical devices within the Endoscopy Unit.
The role involves working under the supervision of the Decontamination Lead and CNM2 to ensure all equipment is processed in accordance with national guidelines, manufacturer instructions, infection prevention and control standards, and hospital policies.
The post holder will contribute to maintaining a safe, efficient and compliant decontamination environment to support high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities 
Decontamination & Reprocessing
•    Perform manual cleaning of endoscopes in accordance with established protocols
•    Operate Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AERs) following training and competency assessment
•    Ensure correct connection, leak testing, flushing and preparation of endoscopes prior to processing
•    Assist in drying, storage and handling of reprocessed scopes in designated cabinets
•    Maintain clear separation of clean and dirty areas in line with workflow procedures
•    Escalate equipment faults or processing concerns to the Decontamination Lead

Traceability & Documentation
•    Accurately record all stages of the decontamination process using electronic traceability systems
•    Ensure correct logging of endoscope serial numbers, patient linkage and cycle parameters
•    Maintain clear, accurate and timely documentation in line with department guidelines
•    Assist in preparing documentation for audits and inspections

Infection Prevention & Quality
•    Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control standards
•    Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
•    Assist in routine environmental cleaning of the decontamination area
•    Participate in internal audits and quality improvement initiatives
•    Report incidents, near misses or breaches in protocol in accordance with hospital policy

Equipment & Environmental Responsibilities
•    Assist in monitoring stock levels of detergents, disinfectants and consumables
•    Ensure appropriate storage and handling of chemicals
•    Maintain cleanliness of sinks, work surfaces, trolleys and equipment
•    Support scheduled maintenance and validation activities as directed

Team & Communication
•    Work collaboratively with the Endoscopy nursing team and Decontamination Lead
•    Communicate effectively regarding scope availability and turnaround times
•    Attend team meetings and training sessions as required
•    Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to support service needs

Working Conditions
•    Exposure to biological materials and chemicals used in the decontamination process
•    Requirement to wear PPE in line with safety protocols
•    Manual handling and standing for prolonged periods may be required
•    Work in a fast-paced clinical environment with time-sensitive turnaround requirements

Professional Development
•    Participate in mandatory training and departmental study days
•    Undertake further education in decontamination practices as required
•    Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current standards and best practice in endoscope reprocessing

Essential Criteria
Knowledge/Experience    
•    QQI/FETAC Level 5 Healthcare Qualification (desirable)
•    Relevant qualification in RIMD Decontamination (desirable) or willingness to undertake
•    Experience in a healthcare, endoscopy or decontamination setting (desirable)
•    Basic IT skills
•    Good organisational and time management skills
•    Professional, responsible and safety-focused approach to work
