Nursery Operative

Kellys Nursery Ltd is looking for an enthusiastic, reliable and hardworking Nursery Operative to join our established production team.

This is a varied, physically active and hands-on role within a busy plant nursery. The position involves working outdoors, manual labour and regular lifting and moving of plants, pots and other nursery materials.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with an interest in horticulture who would like to increase their plant knowledge and develop practical horticultural skills while gaining valuable experience in plant production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with all aspects of plant production.

  • Potting, weeding, watering, caning etc.

  • Lifting and moving plants, pots, compost and other nursery materials

  • Loading, unloading and moving stock around the nursery

  • Assisting the production team with day-to-day nursery operations
  • Maintaining clean, tidy and organised working areas

  • Carrying out a variety of other nursery duties depending on seasonal requirements

Person Specification & Skills

The successful candidate should:

  • Have a genuine interest in plants and the horticultural industry

  • Be comfortable carrying out physical work and manual handling, including regular lifting

  • Have excellent timekeeping and be reliable

  • Be highly organised and able to follow instructions

  • Be able to work independently and use their own initiative

  • Work well as part of an established team

  • Be flexible and able to adapt to the diverse nature of the role

  • Enjoy practical, hands-on work

  • Enjoy working outdoors and be prepared to work in varying weather conditions

  • Be willing to learn and develop their horticultural knowledge and skills

Desirable

  • Previous experience in horticulture, plant production, farming, landscaping or a similar practical environment

  • Full driving licence

  • Previous experience operating forklifts, tractors or other nursery/agricultural machinery

  • Relevant machinery or forklift certification would be an advantage

Previous horticultural experience is beneficial but not essential, as training can be provided. A good work ethic, reliability, willingness to learn and a genuine interest in plants are important to us.
