The Role:
BnM is hiring a Principal Grid Engineer. The Principal Grid Engineer provides technical authority and senior leadership for transmission and distribution grid connection activities across the renewable energy portfolio. The role provides strategic leadership in the development, optimisation and delivery of grid infrastructure associated with renewable generation, energy storage and large demand customer projects.
The role leads complex engineering studies, supports grid strategy development, manages critical technical interfaces with stakeholders and ensures compliance with all relevant Grid Code, connection policy and regulatory requirements. The Principal Grid Engineer provides technical assurance, mentoring and specialist expertise across the Grid Team while supporting the wider business in achieving commercially optimal and technically robust project outcomes.
The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:
- Provide strategic, professional, cost-effective and value-adding electrical and grid engineering expertise across the Renewables function. Provide technical authority, governance and assurance for all grid connection, transmission network and Grid Code matters associated with renewable generation, energy storage and large energy user projects. Lead the development and implementation of grid connection strategies, identifying network opportunities, constraints, reinforcement requirements and emerging regulatory developments that may influence project viability, delivery strategy and portfolio value. Maintain technical ownership of grid connection strategies, Grid Connection Agreements, compliance obligations and associated engineering standards across the renewable energy portfolio. Maintain a detailed understanding of Irish grid connection policy, Grid Code requirements, transmission planning processes and industry developments, ensuring their effective application across all projects and business activities. Represent the Company's interests at industry forums, technical committees, regulatory consultations and stakeholder working groups, influencing policy development, industry best practice and future network development where appropriate.
- Provide leadership, mentoring and technical direction to the Grid Team, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, continuous improvement, innovation and knowledge sharing. Provide senior technical leadership, guidance and decision-making for complex grid connection, transmission infrastructure and grid compliance matters across the project portfolio. Support capability development across the wider organisation by providing specialist technical advice, independent review and technical assurance on grid-related risks, opportunities and strategic decisions. Lead engagement with CRU, contractors, consultants, OEMs and other key stakeholders, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships to support successful project delivery and long-term business objectives. Support succession planning, talent development and knowledge transfer initiatives to ensure the continued growth of grid engineering capability within the organisation.
- Lead engineering, power systems analysis and optioneering activities to identify technically robust and commercially optimal grid connection solutions across the renewable energy portfolio. Provide technical authority, governance and assurance for power system studies and technical assessments relating to network capacity, power flows, fault levels, electrical constraints, curtailment, reactive power requirements and Grid Code compliance. Maintain technical ownership of grid connection strategies, Grid Connection Agreements and associated compliance obligations, ensuring alignment with Grid Code requirements, connection policy, System Operator requirements and industry best practice throughout all phases of project development and operation. Provide strategic leadership and technical guidance on grid-related risks, opportunities, network developments and connection strategies, supporting business planning, investment decisions and the successful delivery of renewable energy infrastructure projects.
- Provide technical and commercial leadership across all phases of major electrical and grid infrastructure projects, including feasibility, consenting, procurement, construction, commissioning, energisation and operational handover. Lead the delivery and commercial management activities associated with major grid engineering and construction contracts, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations, technical requirements, programme milestones and commercial objectives. Lead and manage engagement with contractors, consultants, OEMs and System Operators, managing contract performance, change control, claims, risk mitigation and key project interfaces throughout delivery. Oversee and coordinate all aspects of design, manufacturing, construction, testing and commissioning to ensure safe, compliant and cost-effective project execution in accordance with Grid Connection Agreements, project specifications and statutory obligations. Monitor programme performance, stakeholder coordination and project risks, implementing corrective actions where necessary to optimise outcomes and support the successful delivery of grid infrastructure projects.
- Provide senior technical leadership and subject matter expertise for complex grid and transmission-related matters, undertaking technical assurance, independent review and expert guidance on critical engineering deliverables. Support senior management in strategic decision-making, business planning and business development activities through the provision of specialist grid engineering expertise. Lead the development and continuous improvement of grid engineering standards, procedures, methodologies and best practices, ensuring consistent, high-quality and compliant technical delivery across the renewable energy portfolio.

What we're looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge, and attributes:
- Hons Degree (Lvl 8 FETAC) in Electrical Engineering is essential. Postgraduate (Lvl 9 FETAC) qualification in a relevant discipline would be an advantage for this role.
- 15+ years relevant experience with extensive exposure to Irish transmission and distribution systems.
- Extensive technical experience in HV electrical design and consenting for 110/220/400 kV substations, underground cables, and overhead line infrastructure.
- Hands on experience in conducting power system & earthing studies including but not limited to power flow analysis, earthing studies, lightning studies using software such as CYMCAP, CDEGS, ELEK, PSS/e.
