Role Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and practically minded Technical Sales & Estimating Assistant to join our growing metal fabrication business. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with hands-on fabrication or engineering workshop experience who is looking to develop into a customer-facing technical sales and estimating role.

The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the Managing Director and Senior Leadership Team. They will win new customers and deal directly to prepare quotations, estimate fabrication cycle times, support project costing, and help drive new business opportunities. The role combines practical engineering knowledge with commercial development and would suit someone energetic, organised, and eager to grow within a dynamic SME environment.

Experience within metal fabrication, welding, architectural metalwork, or general engineering manufacturing would be highly advantageous.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Prepare accurate quotations and estimates for fabrication and engineering projects based on drawings, specifications, and customer enquiries.
  2. Assess fabrication methods, labour content, material requirements, and process cycle times to support commercially competitive pricing.
  3. Liaise directly with customers, contractors, architects, and project managers regarding enquiries, quotations, revisions, and technical requirements.
  4. Develop and maintain strong customer relationships while actively supporting new business development and sales growth.
  5. Be mobile, hunt new business opportunities and attend customer meetings to assess project requirements and identify commercial opportunities.
  6. Coordinate closely with workshop and production teams to ensure estimates and quotations reflect practical fabrication and installation realities.
  7. Procurement activities including supplier pricing requests and material cost verification.
  8. Support order processing, job tracking, and commercial administration within the company ERP and production systems.
  9. Monitor quotation success rates, customer feedback, and market activity to support continuous improvement in the sales process.
  10. Represent the company professionally and proactively in all customer interactions while contributing positively to the wider team environment.

Skills-Based Competency Requirements

  1. Practical experience within metal fabrication, welding, manufacturing, construction, or engineering workshop environments.
  2. Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and technical information.
  3. Good understanding of fabrication processes, material usage, and workshop production methods.
  4. Strong numerical and organisational skills with the ability to prepare accurate estimates and quotations.
  5. Competent IT skills with the ability to learn ERP systems, estimating software, and Microsoft Office applications.

Personal Trait Requirements

  1. Energetic, ambitious, and motivated to develop a long-term career in technical sales and estimating.
  2. Hands-on and practical mindset with strong commercial awareness.
  3. Strong communication skills and confidence interacting with customers and production personnel.
  4. Reliable, organised, and capable of managing multiple enquiries and priorities simultaneously.
  5. Positive attitude with a willingness to learn, take initiative, and contribute to the growth of the business.

Desirable (But Not Essential)

  • Previous experience in estimating, quoting, or technical sales.
  • Experience in architectural metalwork, structural steel, aluminium fabrication, or bespoke manufacturing.
  • Forklift licence or site safety training.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and production workflows.
